How to take a 50% deposit on Wix pre-orders

Wix Stores can mark a product as a pre-order. Taking half the money for it at checkout is a different thing, and Wix Stores cannot do that at all.

So half up front needs one of three routes. This page goes through each one, what it costs and what it breaks, starting with the pre-order setting itself.

What the pre-order setting actually does

The pre-order switch belongs to a single product. You open the product, find its inventory section, and turn it on there.

That is one product at a time. I have not found a way to switch a whole catalogue to pre-order at once, and the bulk actions in the product list did not include it when I looked. Check your own product list before you plan a few hundred edits by hand.

The switch changes nothing about payment. It sits with the stock settings rather than with the price, and Wix Stores has no partial payment of any kind. A product marked as a pre-order still charges the full price at checkout, or nothing.

Why half up front is not a setting

Wix answers this one directly. "Currently, it's not possible to accept partial payments or deposits in Wix Stores." That is Wix support, on the page where the request lives, and Wix files it as "Feature Request | We are collecting votes for this issue". Wix gives no date for it, so plan around the checkout you have today.

There is one native way to take part of the money, and it is not at checkout. On an order that is still unpaid, you can charge part of the amount yourself by keying in the customer's card, with Wix Payments or Isracard. That is a manual charge on an order that already exists. It does nothing for a buyer on your site who expects to pay half at checkout and leave.

Both quotes and the manual charge come from the Wix Stores feature request.

The three routes to 50 percent

Free

1. A deposit product and an invoice

You add a second product called something like "50% deposit", price it at half the real price, and say in the description that the rest follows when the item ships. The buyer orders that one, and when the stock lands you write a Wix Invoice for the other half.

It costs nothing in money. What it breaks is the order. The order is for the placeholder, so your stock count and your reports show a deposit instead of the thing you sold, and every balance is an invoice you write and chase by hand.

Dev hours

2. Custom code with Velo

Wix has a pricing SPI that lets custom code set what a line item costs, and that has been the Wix forum's standard answer for years. It needs someone who writes Velo.

It costs developer hours at the start and again when Wix changes its checkout. It also stops at the deposit. Getting the second half paid later is a separate job the code does not do.

Monthly fee

3. The app

Deposits & Partial Payments takes a percentage or a fixed amount, either on one product or across the whole store. I built it, so read this block as the maker describing the product, not as a neutral review.

The buyer orders the real product and the Wix checkout splits the price into Pay Now and Pay Later. When the deposit is paid, the app creates the payment link for the balance and lists that balance with its state. It sends up to three reminders on the balance-due days you set for the store, anywhere from 1 to 365 days. Those days are a store setting rather than a date typed on a single order.

It costs a monthly fee once you outgrow the free plan. It does not break the order, because the order is for the real product and your stock count sees it.

Get it on Wix

At two or three pre-orders a month the deposit product and an invoice is enough, and none of this is worth a monthly fee.

A worked example at 50 percent

The numbers here are an example, not a Wix default. A workshop pre-sells a made-to-order ceramic dinner set at USD 620 and wants half at checkout.

On the manual route the buyer pays USD 310 for a product called "50% deposit". Six weeks later, when the set is ready, you write a Wix Invoice for the remaining USD 310 and send it yourself. Nothing links that invoice to the original order.

With the app the buyer orders the dinner set itself, and the checkout shows Pay Now USD 310 and Pay Later USD 310. Once the first 310 is paid, the app creates the payment link for the second and lists the balance until it is settled.

What it costs

The deposit product costs nothing, and so does writing the invoices yourself.

The app has a free plan that tracks 25 open balances at a time. Per-product rules and automatic reminders need the paid plan, which is USD 24.90 per month, or USD 19.92 per month billed yearly. The listing shows the price that applies today.

If only the pre-order items should take a deposit and everything else should charge in full, that is a per-product rule, so it sits on the paid plan.

Short answers

Can Wix Stores take a 50% deposit on its own?
No. Wix says it is not possible to accept partial payments or deposits in Wix Stores, and the request is open and collecting votes.
Does the pre-order setting change what the buyer pays?
No. It sits in the product's inventory section and changes nothing about payment. Wix Stores has no partial payment at all.
What breaks if I sell a "50% deposit" product?
The order is for the placeholder, so your stock count and reports miss the real product, and every balance is an invoice you chase by hand.
Can I charge part of an order by hand?
Yes, on an order that is still unpaid, by keying in the card with Wix Payments or Isracard. That is a manual charge rather than a deposit at checkout.
Can I switch every product to pre-order at once?
I have not found a way to do it. The switch sits in each product's inventory section, and the bulk actions in the product list did not include it when I looked.
What does the free plan cover?
The free plan tracks 25 open balances at a time. Per-product rules and automatic reminders need the paid plan.
