How to take a deposit on Wix Stores

"Currently, it's not possible to accept partial payments or deposits in Wix Stores."
Wix support, filed as a feature request

Wix Stores cannot take a deposit, and that is not a setting you missed. Wix says so in the help article most people read right before they land here. This page goes through the three ways merchants work around it, what each one costs, and how to tell whether you need a deposit at all or a different Wix product.

Which Wix product are you on?

Most of the confusion starts here. "Deposit" means something different in each Wix product, and no Wix page lists them side by side.

Wix product Deposit at checkout? How the balance gets collected
Wix Stores No, open feature request n/a
Wix Bookings Yes, for services In person only. No online balance collection built in.
Wix Pricing Plans No, open feature request n/a
Wix Invoices Yes On the invoice, manually, one customer at a time
Wix Events No Charge in full or not at all
Wix Hotels Yes In person on arrival

Already on Bookings?

If the deposit part already works for you, your problem is the third column: getting the rest of the money without chasing people by hand. Option 3 below covers paid Bookings services as well as Stores products.

Made to order

Custom furniture, signage, cakes, garments, jewellery. If you want 30 or 50 percent up front, Wix Stores on its own charges the full price or nothing.

The three real options

Free

1. The manual workaround

Create a product called something like "50% deposit", let the customer buy that, then send the remaining amount as a Wix Invoice when the piece is ready.

What it costs you in money: nothing. In practice:

  • The order is for a fake product, so inventory is not touched and your reports count a "deposit" instead of the thing you sold.
  • Tax on the deposit product is set up by hand and can end up wrong for the real item.
  • Every balance is a manual invoice you have to remember to send, then remember to chase.

Fine for two custom orders a month, not for ten.

Dev hours

2. Custom code with Velo

The Wix forum's standard answer for years has been custom Velo code that changes the price of a line item at checkout. It can be made to work.

  • You need someone who writes Velo.
  • You own the maintenance when Wix changes its checkout.
  • Collecting the balance later is a separate problem the code does not solve.

Budget: developer hours up front plus ongoing maintenance.

Worth it only with a developer on retainer.

Monthly fee

3. An app from the Wix App Market

An app can change what the checkout charges without a fake product, keep the list of open balances, and send the payment link for the rest. That is what Deposits & Partial Payments does. I built it, so read this card as the maker describing the product, not as a neutral review.

  • The buyer orders the real product and pays the deposit inside the normal Wix checkout. It shows Pay Now and Pay Later.
  • Percentage or fixed amount, per product or for the whole store. Also works for paid Bookings services.
  • Every open balance, due date and payment state in one dashboard, with up to three reminders on days you choose.
  • Free plan: 25 open balances at a time. Per-product deposits and automatic reminders need the paid plan. The price is on the listing.
  • It stores amounts, due dates and payment state. Never card details.

Enter 58E1GUIDE at checkout and the first paid month is free. Valid until 9 March 2027.

Get it on Wix

Do not buy an app if you take fewer than a handful of custom orders a month. The manual workaround is genuinely enough for that.

A worked example with real numbers

A customer orders a custom oak table for USD 800 and your rule says 30 percent up front. Here is the same order once with the app and once with the manual workaround.

With the app

  1. USD 240 At checkout the buyer sees Pay Now USD 240 and Pay Later USD 560, and pays the 240 by card as usual.
  2. 1 order Wix records one order for the table, partially paid. Your stock and reports show a table, not a "deposit".
  3. USD 560 The app lists the balance with its due date and creates the payment link.
  4. Settled Reminders go out on the days you set. When the customer pays the link, the order is settled.

With the manual workaround

  1. USD 240 The buyer purchases a product called "30% deposit". Inventory is untouched, reports show a deposit, not a table.
  2. 6 weeks When the table is ready you write a Wix Invoice for USD 560 yourself, from memory or from a spreadsheet.
  3. USD 560 You chase the invoice by hand until it is paid. Nothing links it to the original order.

Why pay later is not a deposit

If you searched for pay later, Klarna, Afterpay or Affirm and landed here: those services pay you the full price immediately and take on the customer's instalments themselves. The customer owes them, not you. That is the opposite of a deposit, where you hold part of the money and the customer still owes you the rest.

If you want to be paid in full on day one and let someone else carry the risk, you want BNPL, and Wix Payments offers it in supported countries. If you want to charge a part up front because the item does not exist yet, you want a deposit, and you are on the right page.

Short answers

Can Wix Stores do a deposit natively?
No. Wix says so and is collecting votes for it.
Does a "deposit product" hurt anything?
It skips inventory and puts a fake product in your reports. Tax needs manual care.
Can the balance be collected online?
With the manual route, only by sending an invoice yourself. With the app, through the balance payment link and reminders.
Does this work for Wix Bookings?
Bookings can take a service deposit itself but only collects the rest in person. The app covers paid Bookings services too, so the balance can be paid online.
Is there a free way that keeps the real product on the order?
Not that I know of without code. The app's free plan is the closest, with 25 open balances at a time.
