Wix Bookings deposit: how to collect the balance online

Wix Bookings can take a deposit when a client books. That part is a setting rather than an app, and it works. Most people land here looking for the other half, getting the rest of the money when the client is not standing in front of them.

Wix collects the rest in person and offers no way to take it online afterwards. This page covers what the built-in option does, where it stops, and the three routes that get the balance paid.

What Wix Bookings can do on its own

The Wix help article "Selecting how you charge for Bookings services" lists four ways to charge for a service. One of them takes a deposit online and leaves the rest to be paid in person, and you choose it for a service rather than for the whole site.

Three details decide whether the built-in option fits your business. The deposit is always paid online, so there is no version of this where the client promises to bring it. An optional setting lets clients pay the full amount online instead of only the deposit, which is the one route where all the money arrives before the appointment. Deposits cannot be added to a service if you enable the manual approval feature, so a studio that approves every booking by hand has to choose between the two.

Check that the setting exists in your own dashboard before you plan around it. Wix writes that the feature is not yet available for all users, which is why some people read the article and then cannot find the option.

Where the built-in deposit stops

The built-in deposit stops at the appointment. You collect the rest in person, and Wix gives you no built-in way to collect the remaining balance online later. For a hairdresser that is fine, because the client is at the counter anyway. For work that finishes after the appointment, or for a client who does not turn up, you have to ask for the balance yourself.

The amount is fixed as well. Bookings deposits are fixed amounts rather than percentages, so a rule like 30 percent up front is a number you work out yourself, type in, and redo every time the price changes. Percentage deposits are an open feature request with Wix.

If you also sell products, Wix Stores is worse rather than different. There is no deposit at that checkout at all, and Wix has the request filed as "Feature Request | We are collecting votes for this issue".

What this page says about Bookings comes from the Wix help article "Selecting how you charge for Bookings services". The two requests below are the ones Wix keeps open.

Three ways to collect the balance

Free

1. In person, the way Wix documents it

The client pays the deposit online at booking and hands you the rest at the appointment, on the card terminal or in cash. This is the route the help article describes and it costs nothing.

It works when the client turns up. When they do not, you hold a deposit and have to chase the rest.

2. A Wix Invoice for each booking

You can write a Wix Invoice for the remaining amount and send it yourself, which does let the client pay online. It costs nothing beyond the time it takes.

The bookkeeping is the part it does not solve. Each invoice is one client, written by hand, with nothing linking it to the booking, and remembering which of last week's appointments still owes you money is your job. That works for a handful of bookings a month. Past that it is a list you keep by hand.

Monthly fee

3. The app

Deposits & Partial Payments covers paid Wix Bookings services as well as Wix Stores products. I built it, so read this block as the maker describing the product, not as a neutral review.

When the deposit is paid, the app creates the payment link for the balance, so the client can pay the rest online instead of at the counter. The deposit itself is a percentage or a fixed amount. The app lists every open balance with its state and sends up to three reminders on the balance-due days you set for the store, anywhere from 1 to 365 days. Those days are a store setting rather than a date typed on each order.

Get it on Wix

If your clients turn up and pay at the counter, the built-in deposit already does the job and none of this is worth a monthly fee.

A worked example

The numbers here are an example, not a Wix default. A studio charges USD 300 for a session and takes USD 90 when the client books. On the built-in route the client hands over the remaining USD 210 at the appointment.

With the app, the same USD 90 comes in at booking and the USD 210 gets a payment link as soon as that deposit is paid. The client can pay it that evening or after the session, and a reminder goes out on the balance-due day the studio set for its store.

What it costs

The built-in deposit costs nothing, and so does writing the invoices yourself.

The app has a free plan that tracks 25 open balances at a time. Per-product rules and automatic reminders need the paid plan, which is USD 24.90 per month, or USD 19.92 per month billed yearly. The listing shows the price that applies today.

Short answers

Can Wix Bookings take a deposit without an app?
Yes. An online deposit with the rest paid in person is one of the four ways to charge for a service, and Wix says the option is not yet available for all users.
Can the client pay the rest online?
Not through Wix Bookings after the booking. There is an optional setting that lets clients pay the full amount online instead, but Wix has no built-in way to collect the remaining balance online later.
Does the deposit work with manual approval?
No. Wix says deposits cannot be added to a service if you enable the manual approval feature for services.
Can I take a percentage instead of a fixed amount?
Not in Wix Bookings, where deposits are fixed amounts and a percentage deposit is an open feature request. The app takes a percentage or a fixed amount.
Does the app cover Bookings as well as Stores?
Yes. Deposits & Partial Payments covers paid Wix Bookings services as well as Wix Stores products.
What does the free plan cover?
The free plan tracks 25 open balances at a time. Per-product rules and automatic reminders need the paid plan.
